Saturn in Opposition / Saturno Contro Series: Open Roads: New Italian Cinema [June 6 – 12, 2008] Director: Ferzan Ozpetek; Country: Italy/France/Turkey; Release: 2007, Runtime: 113 Saturn in Opposition, Ferzan Ozpetek’s fourth film in Open Roads and a recent critical and commercial hit, focuses on contemporary 30- and 40-somethings trying to make sense of their lives in an age in which the old certainties have disappeared. Lorenzo (Luca Argentero) and Davide (Pierfrancesco Favino) make their lives together within a circle that includes Antonio (Stefano Acorsi) and Angelica (Margherita Buy), married with children; Nerval (Serra Yilmaz) and her policeman husband (Filippo Timi); and Davide’s ex, Sergio (Ennio Fantastachini). When tragedy strikes, the boundaries and divisions among friends, acquaintances and even lovers become brutally apparent. Ozpetek, one of the finest Italian directors to have emerged over the past decade, paints a rich, beautifully detailed portrait of these characters' interactions, capturing the feeling of a very contemporary reality. His work perfectly embodies that willingness explore new areas and aspects of Italian society that guides many of the best new filmmakers.
