A Last Note / Gogo no Yuigon-jo
Series: Japanese Screen Classics: In Honor of Madame Kawakita [July 30 – Aug 14, 2008]
Director: Kaneto Shindô, Country: Japan, Release: 1995, Runtime: 112

“A poignant film from one of Japan’s most accomplished veteran directors.” – Elliott Stein, The Village Voice

One of Shindô’s loveliest films — and the last to feature his late wife and frequent lead actress Nobuko Otowa — A Last Note is a wry but perceptive look at aging. Famous stage actress Yoko Morimoto returns to the mountain village where she has spent her summer holiday for years and discovers that the local carpenter has committed suicide, after carefully preparing his coffin and making arrangements so that his death will cause the least amount of bother to his neighbors. Intrigued by the man’s seeming acceptance of the inevitable end, Yoko muses about her own final years, even picking out a burial stone that could be appropriate. Yet her idyll is interrupted by the unexpected visit of an old friend, Tomie, who’s begun to lose her mental faculties. Shindô makes several references to Chekhov, and the comparison is apt: as in Chekhov’s plays, characters discover that much of their destiny is ruled by immutable natural cycles that they can only learn to accept.
