Conflagration / Enjo Series: Japanese Screen Classics: In Honor of Madame Kawakita [July 30 – Aug 14, 2008] Director: Kon Ichikawa, Country: Japan, Release: 1958, Runtime: 99 Quite possibly Ichikawa’s masterpiece, this blistering adaptation of Mishima’s novel The Temple of the Golden Pavilion fills in some of the narrative gaps of the original, creating an even richer, more nuanced portrait of Goichi, the young boy entrusted to the care of the childless head monk at Shukaku, a Buddhist temple in Kyoto. Goichi shows real passion and commitment to his religious training and seems destined to inherit the reins of the temple after the monk’s death — until the boy discovers to his horror that his beautiful temple may have been profaned. Loosely based on an actual incident that rocked Japan soon after the war, Conflagration is Ichikawa’s portrait of the apures — a corruption of the French après, or “after” — a generation that’s lost faith with the old ways but has yet to replace them with something else. The brilliant cinematography is by Kazuo Miyagawa (Rashômon, Sansho the Baliff, Floating Weeds).
