Intentions of Murder / Akai satsui
Series: Japanese Screen Classics: In Honor of Madame Kawakita [July 30 – Aug 14, 2008]
Director: Shohei Imamura, Country: Japan, Release: 1964, Runtime: 150

The most extreme of Imamura’s early Nikkatsu studio productions, Intentions of Murder begins as Riichi, a gaunt “salary man,” berates a large, voluptuous woman at the train station for bringing him only a change of underwear when he needed a full change of clothes. The woman, Sadako (Masumi Harukawa), was a maid for Riichi’s family but has become his common-law wife. She is followed home by Hiraoko, a hapless jazz drummer, who robs and then rapes her. As Sadako contemplates suicide, her husband returns, followed by Hiraoko — this time declaring his love for her. A chilling story of a woman who will fight, and even kill, to preserve her unhappiness, Intentions of Murder is grounded by an extraordinary performance by Harukawa as Sadako, a woman whose connection to her own desires stand in stark contrast to the perverse machinations of just about everyone else. Imamura shot the film entirely on location, with the tawdry backdrop of Tokyo’s low-rent suburbs providing a perfect counterpoint to this wild tale of passion.
