The Whales of August
Series: Lindsay Anderson: Revolutionary Romantic [Aug 15 - 21, 2008]
Director: Lindsay Anderson, Country: USA, Release: 1987, Runtime: 90

On its surface, Lindsay Anderson’s final film seems like an anomaly, but David Berry’s play, adapted for the screen by Anderson, is steeped in the family conflicts that interested the director throughout his career.

This beautifully photographed and intensely emotional drama features two motion picture giants—Lillian Gish and Bette Davis—uniting their legendary talents to play siblings squabbling during a holiday on the Maine island where they once perennially spent their summers. The situation only gets worse when Sarah (Gish) invites their genteel neighbor (the charming Vincent Price) for tea, causing Libby (Davis) to get into a snarling fit. The gossipy but amiable Tisha (Ann Sothern, an Oscar nominee for her performance) brings a lively zest for life into the careworn household.

“There’s not a gesture or a line reading that doesn’t reflect her nearly three-quarters of a century in front of the camera,” wrote New York Times critic Vincent Canby on Gish’s last screen performance. “Whales of August celebrates its two great, very different actresses. Miss Gish glows with sweetness and beauty…Miss Davis’s rudeness is heartbreaking and hilarious.” Rex Reed declared the film, “A cinematic masterpiece.”

Producer Mike Kaplan will introduce the Wednesday, Aug. 20, screening.
