Cruel Story of Youth, aka Naked Youth / Seishun zankoku monogatari

Director: Nagisa Oshima, Country: Japan, Release: 1960, Runtime: 96

NEW 35MM PRINT

As the demographics for movie audiences began to shift in Japan and elsewhere, Japan’s studios searched for models of films that could appeal to the growing youth market. Impressed by the success of Nikkatsu’s “sun tribe films”—works about aimless youth, full of violence and other illicit activities—Shochiku called upon its cadre of young directors to create a new kind of cinema for a new audience. The result: the beginnings of the Japanese New Wave, perhaps the only such movement ever sponsored by the industry itself.

Oshima’s film is a delirious color and Scope epic focusing on a young couple that hustles older men by thrusting them into compromising situations. Yet what impresses most in Cruel Story of Youth is the overwhelming speed and energy of a world on the verge of exploding at any second.
