Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence marked his triumphant return to center stage of international cinema. The film became a major international success that is also one of his finest films. David Bowie plays Major Jack Celliers, ranking officer for the British soldiers miserably interned in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp on Java during World War II. The camp's commander, Captain Yonoi (Japanese rock star Ryuichi Sakamoto, who also composed the film's haunting score), grows increasingly fascinated with Celliers, trying to unlock the code that seems to guide his prisoner’s bewildering actions. Takeshi Kitano (aka Beat Takeshi, in his first major screen appearance) plays Sgt. Hara, a brute responsible for the day-to-day running of the camp, who understands Yonoi better than he knows himself.
