Entering the bird in a few local contests, Dioniso goes on to claim all the prizes, eventually attracting the attention of a rich and powerful cockfighter, Don Lorenzo (Narciso Busquets). As the two men form a partnership, their growing closeness arouses the jealousy of “La Caponera” (a smoldering Lucha Villa), Don Lorenzo’s lover. Adapted from a Juan Rulfo story by Gavaldón—with a little help from his friends Gabriel García Márquez and Carlos Fuentes—this film is a fascinating study of sex and power in small town Mexico. The literary breadth of the dialogue gives the film a mythic quality, used to great effect by Gavaldón.
