Occident
Series: Shining Through a Long, Dark Night: Romanian Cinema, Then and Now [April 16-April 27]
Director: Cristian Mungiu, Country: Romania, Release: 2002, Runtime: 105

Occident”—in other words, the West—is the great promise and threat that haunts the three stories that together make up this first feature directed by Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days). Luci and Sorina’s marriage is tested when they’re thrown out of their apartment and forced to look for separate digs. Sorina spends her time with an admiring Frenchman. Luci confides his troubles to his friend Mihaela, who has her own problems: her mother has arranged some kind of match for her with an Italian. Meanwhile, news filters back about the fates of some friends and family who had emigrated west during communism. Mungiu’s script cleverly interweaves these stories, with major characters of one strand appearing as supporting players in the other. Yet what unites the piece is a kind of fear or fantasy of the West, paralyzing action in the present through constant speculation about chances for the future.
