A teacher arrives in a small village, hoping not only to educate the local inhabitants but also to organize them to protest their miserable conditions. The first stirrings of the war are heard: all the men are mobilized, while the outbreak of a typhus starts to decimate the population. Germans occupy the nearby oilfields, and each day brings news that the war is going badly for the Romanian side, leading to a breakdown in even the most traditional relationships. All of this is related through the point of view of Ionica, the teacher’s son, who freely creates his own reality when the one around him becomes too harsh. Sometimes described as “magic realist” because of its deft mixture of real and fantastic events, The Pale Light of Sorrow chronicles a community's discovery of their vulnerability to forces far away and far beyond their control.
