The Return of the Banished / Întoarcerea lui Voda Lapusneanu
Series: Shining Through a Long, Dark Night: Romanian Cinema, Then and Now [April 16-April 27]
Director: Malvina Ursianu, Country: Romania, Release: 1979, Runtime: 148

Romanian history reads as a virtual catalog of invasions and battles, so it’s little wonder that Romanian cinema drew on this potentially rich source material to make the historical epic one of its most popular domestic genres. A kind of Romanian Ivan the Terrible, The Return of the Banished has been hailed by Romanian film critic Manuela Cernat as “a landmark for the Romanian historical film….cerebral and ambiguous, this almost-Shakespearean biography of the bloodthirsty 16th century despot of Moldavia, Alexandru Lapusneanu, is in fact a subtle essay on power, on the drama of those chosen not just to live history but to make it, and on the fate of a country at the mercy of its rulers.” The film offers a vibrant portrait of the Moldavian Renaissance, tracing the intricate machinations of the boyars, or noblemen, who scheme to murder Lapusneanu before he can do the same to them. As Lapusneanu, George Motoi gives a rich, resonant performance that captures both the despot’s inner turmoil and wanton cruelty.
