Young Friends of Film: Harold and Maude
Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Admission (includes screening & reception): $25
Young Friends of Film members receive one complimentary ticket.

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than by watching the cult black comedy classic about a young man’s obsession with death and his first love with an octogenarian? Director Jonathan Demme will introduce the screening. As always, there will be a post-film party with an open bar and hors d’oeuvres.

“[Hal Ashby] was just this extraordinarily generous, enthusiastic, revolutionary, brilliant filmmaker,” said Demme in an interview in Premiere magazine in 1998, “with an amazing open door to anyone who wanted some advice or some input about something they were trying to achieve, or if they were having a problem. Hal was always there with an ear, ready to pick up a telephone and call anybody. There were always young filmmakers, myself included, whom he invited to come watch and hang out at the mix. Someone with no credentials, like myself, would be sitting a row away from Warren Beatty. Hal understood how much you could learn under those circumstances. He was just a very, very generous guy—an inspiration and an example.”

Harold and Maude
Hal Ashby, US, 1971; 91m
Rich kid Harold (Bud Cort) stages elaborate mock suicides to get the attention of his mother (Vivian Pickles), who is intent on finding him romance. Harold freaks out his blind dates, modifies his new sports car to look like a mini-hearse and attends funerals, where he meets the spirited 79-year-old Maude (Ruth Gordon). An eccentric to the core, Maude lives life to the fullest by doing exactly as she pleases. To the disgust of Harold's relatives and the befuddlement of Harold's shrink, Harold falls in love with her. As lilting Cat Stevens tunes play on the soundtrack, Maude teaches Harold a valuable lesson about enjoying life while he can.
