Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave.

The year-end lists keep rolling in and after a weekend when the Los Angeles and Boston followed up last week's announcement by the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review, critics in the nation's capital made their choices for top films of 2013. New York Film Festival premiere 12 Years A Slave came out on top with the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association, taking prizes for Best Film in addition to Best Actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong'o,  Best Acting Ensemble, Best Original Score and Best Adapted Screenplay.

In other prizes, Alfonso CuarĂłn was named Best Director by the group for his work on Gravity, while NYFF51 honoree Cate Blanchett received the Best Actress nod for her role in Blue Jasmine. Gabriela Cowperthwaite's Blackfish, which screened as part of Film Society's Green Screens series, was named Best Documentary for 2013, while Belgium's entry for Best Foreign Language Oscar consideration, The Broken Circle Breakdown took the group's Best Foreign Language Film honor.

“This story of perseverance and the triumph of the human spirit over degradation and misery appealed to our members in a powerful way,” said WAFCA President, Tim Gordon about 12 Years a Slave. And I'm proud of the choice that we collectively made.”

The Washington, D.C. Area Film Critics Association is comprised of 58 DC-VA-MD-based film critics from television, radio, print and the Internet. Voting was conducted from December 6 – 8.
