Arbitrage premieres at Film Society
Nicholas Jarecki’s Arbitrage premiered at the Walter Reade Theater on Wednesday with Jarecki, Richard Gere, Susan Sarandon, Brit Marling, Graydon Carter, Laetitia Casta, and many others in attendance. Hedge funds, car accidents, cover-ups, and millions of dollars being handed out like candy are just a few of the things (along with Tim Roth) you’ll see in this dramatic thriller about family, love and greed. Arbitrage was an Official Selection at Sundance Film Festival, 2012. and is playing daily now through September 27 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
New Orleans Film Festival picks The Paperboy to open, The Sessions and The Iceman to close
Films made in Louisiana are hardly staying in Louisiana these days, but The Paperboy (New Orleans), The Sessions (Louisiana) and The Iceman (Shreveport, LA) will open and close the 23rd New Orleans Film Festival, according to Indiewire.
“The more we can shine a spotlight on the incredible films being shot and produced here in Louisiana, the more opportunities we can create for our indigenous film community. There's no doubt this has been an exciting year for filmmaking in Louisiana. We feel these selections only prove our place as a major contributor to the film scene, both in the U.S. and abroad,” said New Orleans Film Society executive director Jolene Pinder. The Paperboy screened in competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival and The Sessions won the Audience Award and Special Jury Prize at Sundance (as well as being nominated for the Grand Jury Prize) and has since been picked up by Fox Searchlight. The Paperboy screens October 3 at the New York Film Festival as part of the Gala Tribute to Nicole Kidman.

Samuel Goldwyn Films picks up Still
Samuel Goldwyn Films purchased U.S. distribution rights to Michael McGowan's Still starring James Cromwell (Babe) and Genevieve Bujold (Anne of the Thousand Days), reports Indiewire. Still, a romantic drama about an aging couple fighting to build their dream home, is McGowan’s fifth feature.
Jurassic Park could have been Aliens with dinosaurs
Steven Spielberg beat James Cameron to the film rights of Michael Crichton’s bestselling novel, Jurassic Park, by a just a few hours, reports Empire magazine.
“When I saw the film I realized that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been Aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn't have been fair … Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I'd have gone further, nastier, much nastier,” said Cameron. But why all this talk about Jurassic Park? Because Titanic 3D is out on Blu-ray, of course, and The Huffington Post recently interviewed Cameron about his desire to make Titanic 3D.
