The Great Gatsby, Baz Luhrmann’s 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, will open the 66th Cannes Film Festival on May 15. 2013. Leonardo DiCaprio stars as the title character leading a cast that includes Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton.

“It is a great honor for all those who have worked on The Great Gatsby to open the Cannes Film Festival,” said Baz Luhrmann, in a statement today, “We are thrilled to return to a country, place and festival that has always been so close to our hearts, not only because my first film Strictly Ballroom was screened there 21 years ago, but also because F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote some of the most poignant and beautiful passages of his extraordinary novel just a short distance away at a villa outside St. Raphael.”

The film will mark the second 3D movie to open the Cannes festival, following in the footsteps of the 2009 opener, Up. Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! kicked off the festival in 2001.

The 66th Cannes Film Festival will run May 15th – 26th in France.
