The 60th edition of the New York Film Festival, currently in progress through October 16th, recently hosted the World Premiere of the new 4K restoration of Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso, a selection of this year’s Revivals section.

Cauleen Smith’s 1998 feature debut, a landmark in American independent cinema, follows Pica (Toby Smith), a woman in a photography class in Oakland, as she begins photographing the young black men of her neighborhood, having witnessed so many of them fall victim to senseless murder and fearing the possibility of their becoming extinct altogether. The recent 4K restoration of the film was undertaken by The Criterion Collection, Janus Films, and The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Our event, which was sponsored by Turner Classic Movies, featured a post-screening Q&A with Smith that was moderated by Jacqueline Stewart (Director and President of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures). Watch their discussion below!
