On this week’s episode of our podcast, legendary filmmaker Charles Burnett discusses his 1990 film To Sleep with Anger, and cinematographer-turned-director Kirsten Johnson discusses her new film Cameraperson.

To Sleep with Anger is an overlooked masterpiece from renowned director Charles Burnett (Killer of SheepThe Glass Shield). Danny Glover stars as an enigmatic drifter who pays an unexpected visit to an old acquaintance in South Central Los Angeles. On the occasion of the film’s revival run here at the Film Society, Ashley Clark interviewed Burnett for the Film Comment podcast. We’re sharing an excerpt of their conversation in the first part of this episode. To hear the full interview, subscribe to the Film Comment podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play.

Renowned cinematographer Kirsten Johnson has worked with esteemed directors like Michael Moore, Laura Poitras, and Barbara Kopple. In her directorial debut, Johnson recontextualizes the stunning images inside, around, and beyond the works she has shot, constructing a visceral and vibrant self-portrait of an artist who has traveled the globe, venturing into landscapes and lives that bear the scars of trauma both active and historic. Cameraperson was the Closing Night selection at the 45th New Directors/New Films festival earlier this year, and it is now playing in select theaters.
