Best Actress nominee BĂ©rĂ©nice Bejo in The Artist

With the 84th Academy Awards just days away, there’s no denying that this year the road to the Kodak Theater passed through the Film Society of Lincoln Center! Going into Sunday, a whopping 50 nominations belong to films that played here over the past year.

Our slate of New York Film Festival films heads into the Oscars with a stunning 33 nominations, including an event-leading 11 for Hugo, which director Martin Scorsese introduced as a surprise screening of an unfinished project at the 49th edition of the festival, followed closely by The Artist, a heavy favorite in several categories, with 10. The Descendants is nominated in five categories, including Best Picture, while My Week with Marilyn and A Separation each go into Sunday with two. Finally, NYFF favorites Pina (which is still playing in an extended run at the Film Society), Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory, and Footnote each have one nod from the Academy.

J.C. Chandor’s poignant first feature Margin Call, which opened up the 2011 edition of New Directors/New Films and went on to have a popular extended run here in the fall, is nominated for Best Original Screenplay, while Albert Nobbs and Tree of Life, also featured releases at our beautiful new Film Center, picked up three nominations each. Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, an award season underdog ultimately nominated for Sound Editing, screened in the Walter Reade Theater as part of our event “An Evening with Albert Brooks” and also got a week-long run across the street.

Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, a demonstrative drama that played in two special advance screenings for Film Society members and patrons, has six nominations. Iron Lady, W.E., and Undefeated, all of which head into Sunday with nods as well, were among the other member and patron screenings this year.
