Gravity, the new deep space sci-fi film by Alfonso Cuarón, will open the 70th edition of the Venice International Film Festival next month. The new movie, starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as astronauts stranded after the destruction of their space shuttle, will kick off the world's oldest film festival in 3D on August 28, 2013.

Cuarón has a long history with the Venice fest; his Y Tu Mamá Tambien was an acting and screenplay award winner at the event in 2001. Children of Men won a cinematography award there five years later.

The 2013 Venice fest will continue through September 7 in Italy. Here's today's complete announcement from the festival.
