While American actor Robert DeNiro will serve as president of the competition jury at the 64th Cannes Film Festival in May, French filmmaker Michel Gondry will lead the festival's short film and CinĂ©fondation jury.

Praising the director as “a modern day MĂ©lies,” the festival called Gondry a “cinemagician” today, highlighting his use of technology and visual effects to make his movies.

Gondry is no stranger to Cannes. HIs first feature, Human Nature, screened in Cannes in 2001, as did his contribution to the triptych Tokyo! in 2008 and then his documentary The Thorn in the Heart the following year.

The 64th Cannes Film Festival will run from May 11 – 22, 2011 in France.
