A selection of the 41st New York Film Festival, Crimson GoldĀ features a collaboration for the ages. Written by Abbas Kiarostami and directed by Jafar Panahi, the two powerhouse filmmakers reunited for their critique of class conflict in a post-war Iran after working together on their 1995 film,Ā The White Balloon. In honor of the newly remastered Crimson Gold opening in our Virtual Cinema (now playing nationwide), we asked the FLC community for their favorite films from Iranian cinema.

Encompassing a wide range of Iranian cinema, including films released during the fertile Iranian New Wave period, the selections show just how much an impact the country has made on the larger cultural landscape. The FLC community’s picks ranged from arthouse classics like Abbas Kiarostami’s Close-UpĀ and The Koker Trilogy (Where Is the Friend’s House, And Life Goes On,Ā andĀ Through the Olive Trees),Ā to contemporary films likeĀ Asghar Farhadi’sĀ A SeparationĀ and Ana Lily Amirpour’sĀ A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.Ā Explore the wide range of responses below and view all of the films on our Letterboxd!

As our in-theater capacities increase, see whatā€™s playing and coming soon to our theatersĀ and theĀ FLC Virtual Cinema. Join our online community on Instagram,Ā Twitter,Ā Facebook, orĀ Letterboxd, and donā€™t miss a thing by subscribing to theĀ weekly newsletter.
