When The Kid with a Bike premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, the early word was that the Dardenne brothers had created the most unexpected thing: a gentle, light, accessible movie.

At an “indieWIRE Meets” free forum, the legendary Belgian filmmakers (The Child, The Son) pushed back against that assessment of their new movie, which screened in the festival’s Main Slate. But they kept the audience laughing—even though they spoke through a translator. “Yeah, I think it’s pretty dark,” Luc deadpanned, before Jean-Pierre added: “But there is some sun.” Moderated by Eric Kohn, a critic at indieWIRE, the forum also explored the directors’ past as documentary filmmakers and their process on each project.
