David Weissman’s new documentary We Were Here will open the 2011 NewFest, New York City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender film festival on July 21st at the Film Society’s Walter Reade Theater. The film is a look at the impact of AIDS on San Francisco as told by the oral histories of people who survived the crisis from its inception in the 80s.

NewFest will also close its 2011 event at Lincoln Center. Richard Ernesto Green’s Gun Hill Road, the story of a transgendered Bronx teen, will conclude the festival on July 28th at the Walter Reade Theater.

The move to bring opening and closing night to Lincoln Center marks a new partnership between the festival the the Film Society. Additional festival screenings will take place at the SVA Theater in Chelsea, Cinema Village downtown, BAM In Brooklyn, the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, and the Jewish Community Center on the Upper West Side.
