It’s a great Friday for cinephiles at the 51st New York Film Festival! Today’s schedule includes a huge selection of experimental films, as well as two acclaimed works from the Official Selection and a Jean-Luc Godard classic.

Yesterday we announced that Jean-Luc Godard's Vivre sa vie (1962) will screen tonight at 9:00pm on Alice Tully Hall's gigantic screen in 35mm for just $10. We think that pretty much speaks for itself. Don't miss this incredible film-watching opportunity!

At 6:00pm, the second screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s new film, The Wind Rises, will take place at the Alice Tully Hall. The great Japanese animator’s new work was inspired by the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Zero fighter plane during World War II. The film has generated a great deal of both acclaim and controversy in Japan and is definitely one to look out for. Kent Jones, NYFF Director of Programming, commented, “I think this is one of [Miyazaki's] greatest films, if not his greatest film.”

Agnieszka Holand's Burning Bush

Burning Bush, the three-part mini-series from Polish director Agnieszka Holland, will be shown in it’s entirety at 6:15pm in the Walter Reade Theater. In January 1969, Czech student Jan Palach set himself on fire to protest the Soviet clampdown that followed in Prague that spring. This heroic historical event formed the backdrop for Holland’s passionate new film. The first screening includes a Q&A with both Holland and the star of the film Tatiana Pauhofova. Burning Bush is the Czech Republic’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Oscars.

Today is the first full day of Views from the Avant-Garde. Today's program serves up work by the late master Raúl Ruiz in the form of his 1987 film Life is A Dream, screening at 12:00pm. Then at 1:00pm, Lois Patiño's Locarno award-winning landscape-meets-ethnographic film Costa da Morte screens in the Howard Gilman Theater. Works by Travis Wilkerson, Anne Charlotte Robertson, Sandro Aguilar, Luther Price, Jodie Mack, and more round out the day's offerings. $7 rush ticket are available to many Views program (see list). There will also be free programs playing in the Film Center Amphitheater throughout the five days of Views. Check out the full lineup here.
