Yeşim Ustaoğlu's Araf – Somewhere in Between

It's hard to believe, but there are only two days left in the New York Film Festival historic 50th edition! Squeeze in a few more films and events while you still can!

To kick off today's main slate offerings, Yeşim Ustaoğlu's Araf – Somewhere in Between will screen at noon with director in person (rush tickets available). Set in a provincial town where the harsh, natural landscape seems to freeze time and space, Araf explores the pulls of desire and escapism that shake an adolescent girl's life when she falls in love with a middle-aged truck driver. With stunning visual direction from Ustaoğlu, Araf highlights the talent and uniqueness of the New Turkish Cinema and delivers a story touched with empathy and honesty.

Today is packed with in person appearances. In addition to Araf, director Pablo Larraín will be attending the 3:00pm screening of his political drama No starring Gael Garcia Bernal. The 4:00pm screening of majestic memoir/film noir/city symphony hybrid The Last Time I Saw Macao will be graced with the presence of co-directors João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata. Finally, the 6:00pm screening of immersive commercial fishing documentary and overall sensory experience Leviathan will have filmmakers Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel attending (rush tickets available). Joachim Lafosse's contemporary tragedy Our Children, and Roger Michell's Hyde Park on Hudson will also be screening as part of today's lineup.

Federico Fellini's Satyricon

On the less contemporary side of things, our Masterworks series will offer an 11:00am screening of Jiří Trnka's Old Czech Legends, a celebration of the centenary of the great master of puppet animation whose contributions to the art are unshaken by time and technology (rush tickets available). The spotlight is also thrown on another notable filmmaker as Otar Iosseliani, The Whistling Blackbird looks at the methods and techniques of native-Georgian director Iosseliani, whose work in France from the 1980s made use of movement, space, and people to hilarious ends (rush tickets available). Samuel Fuller, Independent Filmmaker by André S. Labarthe (rush tickets available), Jacques Rivette: The Night Watchman, Raoul Walsh or the Good Old Days, and Fellini's first (!) NYFF appearance with a restoration of his wild classic Satyricon, will also be screening as part of the festival's intimate look at master filmmakers, their art and influences.

For those craving the immediacy of live performance, the special events set for today will surprise and excite, starting with The Met Live in HD: L’Elisir d’Amore at 12:55pm. The popular performance, transmitted live from the Met stage, will be followed by a live, in-theater discussion with Met Opera General Manager Peter Gelb and Gary Halvorson, Emmy Award-winning director of The Met Live in HD. Conversations continue with our HBO Directors Dialogue with Robert Zemeckis, whose highly anticipated film Flight starring Denzel Washington will be closing the festival tomorrow night (tickets released). The final NYFF Live event will also take place today at 4:30pm in the Furman Gallery with program director Richard Peña, who will look back on the 25 years of his rewarding career with the festival.

To close such an exciting day of programming, we have the equally exciting yakuza thriller Outrage Beyond. As the sequel to Takeshi Kitano's 2010 Outrage, Outrage Beyond promises cruel violence, complex character connections, plot threads, and black humor to boot. With popular reception in Japan, Outrage Beyond comes to please and thrill NYFF audiences at 9:15pm in the Frances Beale Theater.
