Dror Moreh's The Gatekeepers

In her article on the final week of the 50th New York Film Festival in today's New York Times, Manohla Dargis writes: “In its final week, the 50th edition of the New York Film Festival aims high and hits the mark again and again.” The piece is called “'More' Is the Mantra at This Festival” and we take that as the ultimate compliment. So today, we're giving you “more” new films from around the world, “more” masterpieces from across time, and “more” directors in-person for everything from intros to Q&As to free conversations!

In today's full-to-bursting roster of Main Slate offerings, directors will be attending three of the seven screenings taking place. Valeria Sarimento will be in person the 3:00pm screening of her historical war epic Lines of Wellington, which was originally slated to be the next film of her husband and longtime collaborator, Chilean master Raúl Ruiz, who died last year. At 6:00pm, Israeli director Dror Moreh will attend the first NYFF screening  of his documentary The Gatekeepers, which Dargis praised in her article: “Mesmerizingly cinematic and politically complex, this documentary jaw-dropper movie explores, with depth and nail-biting intensity, Israel’s history, present and future through the eyes of six former heads of the internal security agency Shin Bet.” Rush tickets available!

Director Sally Potter will be in person at the 6:15pm screening of her powerful coming-of-age story Ginger and Rosa, Elle Fanning's performance in which is already racking up rave reviews. Speaking further about the film and her career, Potter will also take part in a special NYFF Live talk at 7:00pm, followed by a similar talk with director Cristian Mungiu who will speak about his Oscar submission Beyond the Hills, at 8:00pm. Both discussions are free and open to the public in the Film Center Amphitheater, as well as streaming live via YouTube. Other Main Slate films screening today include Fill the Void, the debut feature from Rama Burshtein, whom Dargis describes as “a classicist whose precise framing, beautiful lighting and unabashedly sexy but chaste scenes make this a festival must-see.” As if that weren't enough, we've got encore screenings of Christian Petzold's Barbara, French master Alain Resnais' You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet, and the World Premiere of Alan Berliner's First Cousin Once Removed.

Peter Strickland's Berberian Sound Studio

For those wanting something a little creepier, Midnight Movie Berberian Sound Studio will be screening at 1:00pm. The second feature from British director Peter Strickland is a valentine to the Italian giallos of the 60s and 70s. It stars the always-wonderful Toby Jones and won multiple awards at the Edinburgh Film Festival and Fright Fest. Rush tickets available!

The festival's Masterworks series offers up some classics for (re)viewing, including Pierre Chenal's Native Son, the controversial and audacious adaptation of Richard Wright's novel (starring Wright, himself), as well as Portugese director Pedro Costa's cinematic portraits of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet and Franco-Iranian filmmaker Rafi Pitts' fascinating look at Abel Ferrara in Abel Ferrara: Not Guilty, both part of our Cinéastes/Cinema of Our Time retrospective. Rush tickets available to all three films! The reflection on cinema and creative collaborations also spreads to Dheeraj Akolkar's Liv and Ingmarwhich follows the remarkable relationship between Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman in both their professional and personal lives.
