Captain Phillips director Paul Greengrass
The 51st New York Film Festival gets off and running this evening with the World Premiere of Paul Greengrass' Captain Phillips, but starting tomorrow, the NYFF51 filmmakers are going to get real chatty. In addition to our recently announced NYFF Live free conversations, the Film Society of Lincoln Center is teaming up once again with HBO to present a series of intimate talks with a select group of this year's directors. HBO Directors Dialogues will feature four exclusive sitdowns with filmmakers whose work will be featured at the festival: Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips), Frederick Wiseman (At Berkeley), Richard Curtis (About Time) and Agnieszka Holland (Burning Bush). In addition, a fifth talk featuring James Gray (The Immigrant) will take place on October 12 as part of HBO On Cinema. All established and award-winning filmmakers, these five auteurs represent a wide spectrum of craftsmanship and storytelling technique. On Saturday, September 28 at 12:00pm in the Walter Reade Theater, Academy Award-nominated director Paul Greengrass will be on hand to discuss his latest film, Captain Phillips (NYFF Opening Night selection). The man behind Bloody Sunday, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatium, Greengrass will bring insight into his filmmaking process.
Now eighty-three years of age, the legendary documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman will discuss his work on Sunday, September 29 at 12:00pm in the Bruno Walter Auditorium. To say his films have focused on an eclectic group of institutions would be an understatement.
Director of one of the most beloved comedies of the last decade (Love Actually), Richard Curtis will partake in an HBO Directors Dialogue on Wednesday, October 2nd at 5:15pm in the Furman Gallery. A respected director of British comedies, Curtis is also a highly sought after Academy Award-nominated screenwriter (Four Weddings and a Funeral).
A prolific director on screens large (Europa, Europa and In Darkness) and small (Treme, The Wire, The Killing), Agnieszka Holland's HBO Directors Dialogue will take place on Saturday, October 5th at 3:15pm in the Walter Reade Theater. Of her new film, Burning Bush, NYFF Director of Programming Kent Jones remarked, “It’s one of those movies where all the things that are unquantifiable in movies but that give life to drama and to images are there and present in this movie, the texture of things… the way that you can tell that she remembers how it felt to be alive at that time. It’s an incredibly powerful experience and one of my favorite films that we’re showing.”
Born in Queens, New York, James Gray finally has a film featured in the New York Film Festival! On Saturday, October 12th at 12:15pm in the Walter Reade Theater, the director will be on hand to discuss a deeply personal work, his latest film, The Immigrant, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard.
