Our weekly celebtration of “50 Years of the New York Film Festival” continues with Jean Luc-Godard's 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her from the sixth festival in 1968.

The “her” in Jean-Luc Godard’s 1967 film (presented at NYFF the same year as Weekend) is meant to be a reference to Paris, which was struggling to modernize in the post-war era. It is also a reference to Juliette, a two-timer who is a Parisian housewife by day and a prostitute by night. In contrast to Godard's earlier work revering American cinema and lifestyle, 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her is a complete disillusionment with a consumerist and capitalist society. The film discards a narrative structure and instead focuses on the individual’s relationship to the city with a brilliant use of color. Manohla Dargis of The New York Times calls 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her a “perennial must-see,” offering us a criticism of a failing society. In his article on great coffee scenes, David Thomson from The Guardian notes that the film has “the archetypal coffee scene…We see the ripples from stirring and the short life of bubbles on the surface. We scrutinise the range of colours glimpsed in a cup of black coffee. We feel it as an ocean on which we are engaged in a single-handed voyage. And all the time, Godard's professorial voiceover is instructing us on the lessons in coffee.”

“50 Years of the New York Film Festival” will continue on Tuesday, November 22 (and every Tuesday after that) with Eric Rohmer’s My Night at Maud's from the seventh edition of the festival in 1969.
