Oscar Doc Race Shortlist

Today, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlist of 15 films vying for a Best Documentary Feature nomination at this year’s Academy Awards. Some of our early guesses ended up making the cut, such as Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing’s Detropia. Also included are current Film Society New Release Chasing Ice, NYFF50 Main Slate selection The Gatekeepers, and ND/NF ’12 selections 5 Broken Cameras and How to Surive a Plague.

New York Film Critics Circle Awards

Before being named to the Oscar shortlist, David France’s How to Survive a Plague was the first of many surprise winners for the annual New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Kathryn Bigelow’s upcoming Zero Dark Thirty took home the top prizes for Best Picture and Best Director and Matthew McConaughey won for his supporting turns in Bernie and Magic Mike. See the full list of winners here.

Sight & Sound’s Top Films of 2012

Being that it’s December and most, if not all, of the year’s films have been seen by critics, plenty of “best of” lists are sure to surface in the coming weeks. This past week, the influential UK-based magazine Sight & Sound revelead its top pics for the year in film. The British publication cast a wide net for its list, ranging from NYFF50 Main Slate selection Tabu by Portuguese auteur Miguel Gomes to This is Not a Film (NYFF ’11) from Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. Sitting atop the list is Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master.

Sundance 2013 Premiere Lineups

A week after announcing the first batch of films for the upcoming edition of the Sundance Film Festival, some of the biggest titles were revealed today for the Narrative and Documentary Premiere sections. Some of the most anticipated from the narrative section are Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight and Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake, a six-hour BBC mini-series starring Elisabeth Moss that will screen in its entirety at Sundance. The Documentary Premiere section is equally impressive, with new films from Lucy Walker (Waste Land) and Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side) set to debut in Park City.

Alamo Drafthouse Coming to Brooklyn

Despite having already-planned locations in Yonkers and on the Upper West Side, Alamo Drafthouse has announced they will have a third location in Brooklyn’s City Point. A favorite amongst cinephiles in cities such as Austin, Texas, the Drafthouse plans on opening in Brooklyn in 2015. “Although more than two years on the horizon, I can tell you that the City Point Brooklyn Alamo will be our best theater yet,” said Alamo Drafthouse Founder and CEO Tim League.

Satellite Award Nominees

Deemed by Indiewire as “expectedly bizaare”, the nominations for the 17th annual Satellite Awards were announced today. The usual suspects are included, such as Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty. But more unexpected nominees include Kim Ki-Duk, for his Golden Lion-winning film Pieta, along with Emile Dequenne and Laura Birn for their performances in Our Children (NYFF50) and Purge, respectively.Â
