Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice had its glittering world premiere over the weekend at NYFF52. Based on a Thomas Pynchon novel, it's being dubbed by some as The Big Sleep meets The Big Lebowski. The star studded cast includes such notables as Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Owen Wilson. Joaquin Phoenix headlines the story as Doc Sportello, the hippie private investigator on a mission to find his missing his ex-girlfriend Shasta Fay Hepworth (Katherine Waterston). It is a cinematic time machine, which places the viewer deep within the world of the paranoid, hazy L.A. dope culture of the early ’70s.

Highlights of this weekend included the Projections series (formerly known as Views from the Avant Garde), putting  a spotlight on some of today's most groundbreaking filmmakers and artists with their cutting-edge film and video work as well as the festival's spotlight on transmedia, NYFF Convergence.
