Wrapping up Centerpiece weekend of the 54th New York Film Festival was the U.S. premiere of Aquarius, which caused a political stir at Cannes when the cast and crew staged a red carpet protest of the undemocratic impeachment of Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff. The film’s director, Kleber Mendonça Filho, and lead actress, Sônia Braga, also participated in an NYFF Live talk moderated by Film Society’s Director of Digital Platforms, Michael Gibbons.

Carrie Fisher made quite an impression on the NYFF red carpet Monday night, where she was joined by her French Bulldog, Gary. Fisher’s mother, screen legend Debbie Reynolds, was not able to make it to the festival, but serenaded the audience by phone during the Q&A. Further highlights from earlier this week included the U.S. premiere of graphic artist Dash Shaw’s My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea, an NYFF Live talk with directors whose films screened in Spotlight on Documentary, and the NYFF premiere of Alain Guiraudie’s Staying Vertical.

The 54th New York Film Festival runs September 30 – October 16 at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Stay tuned to our blog for even more photos, as well as podcasts and video coverage throughout the festival!
