Alexander Payne’s Nebraska, which had its U.S. Premiere at the recent New York Film Festival.

San Francisco Film Society is tipping its hat to Awards Season with its first annual “Fall Celebration,” which will “honor creativity, innovation, collaboration and inspiration in cinema.” The organization will honor Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station, Spike Jonze’s Her, Alexander Payne’s Nebraska and Jehane Noujaim’s The Square at the gala event slated for November 14.

The Fall Celebration will honor the “extraordinary creative participants and celebrate specific contributions made in film that represent the core values of the SFFS.” Fruitvale Station as well as Destin Cretton’s Short Term 12 and Benh Zeitlin’s Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild are among the films that have benefitted from SFFS’ $1 million in support it provides annually.

“The San Francisco Bay Area has a unique perspective on film, with different values than any other city’s,” said outgoing San Francisco Film Society Executive Director Ted Hope. “The world knows our directors but we have more industry leaders than any other city other than New York or Los Angeles. This is such a vibrant and diverse community, where creativity and innovation are valued more than any other place in the world. What we chose to celebrate with this new event will soon be recognized as setting the standard worldwide.”

Added SFFS board member Sid Ganis: “The Fall Celebration is a great way to further link like minds in the Bay Area and Hollywood. The focus of the Awards Season has now been broadened to the Bay Area where there are thousands of creative artists in all areas of filmmaking.”

The World Premiere of Her closed out the recent 51st New York Film Festival, while the U.S. debuts of Nebraska and The Square screened at the fest which ran from September 27 – October 13. Fruitvale Station director Ryan Coogler spoke about his Sundance-winning film during the Summer Talks series at the Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center in July.

SFFS’ inaugural Fall Celebration will take place at The Battery, billed as a “contemporary private club” opening this fall. Coogler, Jonze, Noujaim and Payne as well as actors Michael B. Jordan (Fruitvale Station) and June Squibb (Nebraska) will be in attendance.

SFFS produces the annual San Francisco International Film Festival, which will take place April 24 – May 8 next year.
