On this week’s edition of our podcast, we’re featuring a conversation with Portuguese filmmaker Miguel Gomes, whose new film Arabian Nights opens here this month. The three-part epic combines elements of political film, fantasy, and documentary, drawing inspiration from the classic Middle Eastern collection of folk tales, One Thousand and One Nights. Arabian Nights was widely praised by critics at Cannes, with Senses of Cinema calling it “one of the most daring and bold cinematic experiments of the last decade.” Beginning this Friday, we’ll be opening one volume per week over the next three weeks, with marathon screenings scheduled for December 19 and 20. A discount package is available for purchasing tickets to multiple volumes.

The film had its U.S. premiere at the 53rd New York Film Festival earlier this year and, during the festival, Miguel Gomes joined us for one of our free NYFF Live talks, which are sponsored by HBO®. The conversation was moderated by programmer Dan Sullivan.
