One of the more memorable aspects of the moviegoing experience can be what you hear rather than see. And while that can manifest in many forms (diegetic sound, meaning the sounds onscreen itself, i.e. birds chirping, horns honking, babies crying, etc. is but one form), the soundtrack often proves to be most memorable to the viewer’s ear.

Whether via original music composed specifically for the film (Leos’s Carax’s Annette) or via songs pulled from a variety of sources (Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge), everyone has their own personal favorite soundtrack. And while musicals are ripe for inclusion in this category, they are by no means the only genre with great soundtracks.

Inspired by our current theatrical release, Annette, last week’s Community Corner question asked for your favorite movie soundtrack. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s work on The Social Network and Angelo Badalamenti’s score for Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me were two of the most citied examples.
