Joel Coen and Ethan Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis.
Inside Llewyn Davis by Joel and Ethan Coen took two top nods by the Toronto Film Critics Association, taking Best Picture as well as Best Actor for Oscar Isaac. Fellow NYFF51 selections Her and 12 Years A Slave were runners-up in the category. The awards were voted by the TFCA at a meeting Dec. 15, which also selected Cate Blanchett as the year's Best Actress for her role in Blue Jasmine. Alfonso CuarĂłn was selected Best Director for Gravity, while the Coens and Steve McQueen (12 Years A Slave) were named runners up.
TFCA's BMO Allan King Documentary Award was awarded to The Act of Killing by Josh Oppenheimer. The film will screen as part of the upcoming For Your Consideration: Oscar Hopefuls series at Film Society of Lincoln Center. Also receiving recognition from TFCA, Jared Leto was named Best Supporting Actor for his role as the HIV-positive Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club and Jennifer Lawrence was named Best Supporting Actress for her performance as the rambunctious Rosalyn Rosenfeld in David O. Russell’s American Hustle.
“It’s been an unusually thrilling year for cinema,” said TFCA President Brian D. Johnson, film critic at Maclean’s. “And these awards celebrate a remarkable diversity. Among our distinctive Canadian finalists, each offers an inspired take on a compelling issue – rom school bullying in The Dirties to sexual liberation among the disabled in Gabrielle to epic environmental crisis in Watermark.”
In related news, the London Critics' Circle revealed its nominations for the year with Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave coming out on top with 9 nominations including Best Picture. The full list of nominees can be found here. Winners will be announced February 2 at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards.
