Something wicked this way comes in the trailer for Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing. The off-putting confidence of the whistling man in the blue jacket juxtaposed with the jarring score gives us a sense of the overarching suspicion that colors the film, in which an old man comes to town, and its inhabitants consequently set out on murderous rampages for seemingly no reason. Hong-jin has an eye for terror, and explores the idea that paranoia makes people tick and ultimately implode. The Wailing, which recently premiered at Cannes, is a precise genre piece sure to tap into your innermost fears.

The Wailing is now playing at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
