Fire at Sea, winner of the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, depicts the European migrant crisis in a different way, contrasting it with the daily lives of citizens on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa. Following the film’s screening at the New York Film Festival, director Gianfranco Rosi sat down with Film Society Director of Programming Dennis Lim to talk about the making of the film, as well as the experience of interacting with and learning from the inhabitants of Lampedusa. Fire at Sea is Italy’s submission for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar and is now in theaters.
