Ahead of its screening in the inaugural Explorations section of the 54th New York Film Festival, director Albert Serra and legendary actor Jean-Pierre Léaud joined NYFF Director Kent Jones to discuss The Death of Louis XIV at a press conference. In Serra’s elegant yet darkly funny film, Léaud powerfully portrays the title character during his last days in a majestic, career-capping performance after a lifetime onscreen. At this press conference, Léaud related his role to his own life experience, and discussed the intensity of the subject matter explored through his own performance and heightened through the editing of the film.
The Death of Louis XIV opens at the Film Society this Friday, March 31, just after the start of our 20-film retrospective of Léaud’s lifetime onscreen, which began in 1959 with his debut as Antoine Doinel in François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows. The series Jean-Pierre Léaud, from Antoine Doinel to Louis XIV, runs March 29-April 6.
