Park Kwang-hyun’s first film in 12 years and his follow-up to his now classic Korean War drama Welcome to Dongmakgol, is a high-octane revenge fantasy that straddles genres and forms, packing a rapid-fire plot into two hours of visual excess. Fabricated City hits the ground running with a dizzying virtual battle promptly and superbly won by “Captain” Kwon Yu (Ji Chang-wook) and his team of fellow game geeks, called “Resurrection.” A champion in the gaming world, Kwon is otherwise an unemployed ne’er-do-well. After he is framed for the rape and murder of a minor and sentenced to life in prison, he escapes with the unexpected help of a serial killer, triggering a nationwide manhunt. Convinced of Kwon’s innocence, the “Resurrection” team reunites to help their old video game partner, and soon they uncover evidence of an unimaginable conspiracy.
