Olivier Assayas was one of the first in France to write extensively about the new Chinese cinema, and his love for and connection with filmmakers there long predated their international discovery. His first venture into documentary filmmaking—made in close collaboration with his cameraman, Eric Gautier—follows Hou on a guided tour of Taiwan, as he discusses his work in relationship to the vast changes the island has lived through. The portrait of Hou is disarming: it’s hard to imagine that this gum-chewing, affable karaoke singer is the artist responsible for such masterworks as City of Sadness, Goodbye South, Goodbye and Flowers of Shanghai. HHH was the first film of the series to enjoy a theatrical release in France. An Icarus Films Release.
