It’s the evergreen plot of The Shop Around the Corner, You’ve Got Mail, and She Loves Me—this time set in a turn-of-the-century Chicago music store. Clerks Garland and Van Johnson taunt and bicker at work while unwittingly romancing each other as anonymous pen-pals.

Long on both charm and comedy, the ensemble boasts S. Z. Sakall, Spring Byington, Buster Keaton, Marcia Van Dyke, and Clinton Sundberg. Garland delivers five vintage songs (including “Put Your Arms Around Me, Honey” and “I Don’t Care”) in show-stopping fashion, and Liza Minnelli—not quite three years old—makes her film debut in the final shot.

“Airy, charming, and delightful entertainment…a Garland triumph.”
