“Size is one third of sculpture,” claims contemporary artist Michael Heizer. A champion of large-scale negative space—typically natural formations with the “art” removed, or “monumental absences”—Heizer creates installations that say less about the artist’s aesthetic than about the enormity and eternity of his endeavor.
