For 40 years, René Féret has been France’s most autonomous filmmaker, serving as his own writer, producer and even distributor. Now, he has made one of his best and most accessible works with this speculative account of Maria Anna “Nannerl” Mozart (wonderfully played by Féret’s daughter, Marie), the elder sister of Wolfgang and a musical prodigy in her own right. Originally the featured performer, she has been usurped by Wolfgang as the clan’s strict but loving father Leopold tours his talented offspring through the royal courts of pre-revolutionary France. Approaching marriageable age and now forbidden to play the violin or compose, Nannerl chafes at the limitations imposed on her, until a friendship with the son and daughter of Louis XV offers an alternative. An uncommonly realistic period drama, inventively staged on a modest budget, Mozart’s Sister is a film and music lover’s delight.
