The amount of nonfiction films has skyrocketed since the turn of the century. Festivals around the world have celebrated the form, while critics and filmgoers have increasingly included docs on their roster of films to see. The group of filmmakers showing at this year’s NYFF—including Alison McAlpine (Cielo), Ena and Ines Talakic (Hall of Mirrors), among others—represent a cross-section of some of the most compelling documentarians working today.
