Ethan Hawke began acting on screen at the age of 15, and right from the start he brought something new to the movies—an openness, a trust in simplicity, a genuinely exploratory temperament. Hawke has had a remarkable career as an actor, from Dead Poets Society through Hamlet, Training Day and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead. In 1995, he made Before Sunrise, which marked the beginning of a long, fruitful collaboration with Richard Linklater, culminating with Boyhood, one of the best films of this or any other year. We’ll be discussing Hawke’s evolution as an actor and as a director: his wonderful new Seymour: An Introduction, a portrait of pianist Seymour Bernstein, is one of the finest documentaries of the year.
