Taiwan master Li Xing’s warm urban portrait depicts a group of poor immigrants from mainland China living in a ghetto. When a little girl’s mother passes away, a recycling collector takes her under his wing, while neighbors support each other through their own tough times. The success of Li’s movie (his first in Mandarin) inspired the later “healthy realism” led by the Central Motion Picture Company; its location shooting helps draw out the slum’s sense of community.
