The filmography of legendary screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière is enough to boggle the mind, from his work with Luis Buñuel (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie) and Jean-Luc Godard (Every Man for Himself) to Louis Malle (May Fools) and Abbas Kiarostami (Certified Copy), to name just a few of his many provocative and multilayered collaborations. This year’s New York Film Festival features not one but two films co-written by Carrière: Louis Garrel’s A Faithful Man and the closing night selection, Julian Schnabel’s At Eternity’s Gate. We are thrilled to present a conversation with Schnabel and the 87-year-old Carrière about the creation of this extraordinary take on the last days of Vincent Van Gogh.
