Ray pulls out all the stops for the fantastical return of hapless duo Goupy and Bagha, who must contend with a dictator’s brainwashing machine. As the king (played by Marxist actor-playwright Utpal Dutta) tries to pacify the populace by implanting rhyming verses in their minds, Goupy and Bagha (Soumitra Chatterjee and Robi Ghosh) band together with a rebellious schoolteacher to break the spell. Filigreed with song and rhymed banter, it’s one of Ray’s most elaborate productions, as well as a cheeky political allegory.
