In this taut political thriller from Lee Kyoung-mi (Crush and Blush, NYAFF 2009 Special Award for Audacity), co-written by Park Chan-wook, a mother takes a stand against the deceit and hypocrisy of men. Yeon-hong (Son Ye-jin, in a career-best performance) is married to Jong-chan (Kim Ju-hyeok), a former news anchor running for the National Assembly. At first blush, they’re your average upper-class couple, complete with rebellious teenage daughter (Shin Ji-hoon). Ever the dutiful wife, Yeon-hong fully supports her husband’s political aspirations. But on the first day of the campaign, lightning strikes: their daughter goes missing. Yeon-hong begins a desperate search to find clues to her whereabouts only to face unexpected indifference and reluctance from her husband and his aides. The thriller impresses in both its formalism and ambition.
