The comparatively complacent life of composer Jerome Kern was heightened by some fictional subplotting and immeasurably enlivened by two dozen songs from the MGM star roster: Lena Horne, June Allyson, Frank Sinatra, Dinah Shore, Tony Martin, Kathryn Grayson, Angela Lansbury, Van Johnson, Lucille Bremer, and Virginia O’Brien. Kern himself was played by Robert Walker.

Garland (in her fourth month of pregnancy with Liza) appears as Broadway legend Marilyn Miller. Her outstanding sequences include “Look for the Silver Lining” and “Who?” and were directed by Vincente Minnelli. Kay Thompson did the film’s vocal arrangements.
